The European COCOON Project delivers hands-on experiences in biomaterials and bioimaging at ISMAT
From 11th to 14th March, ISMAT hosted the COCOON Living Lab Week as part of the European COCOON Project. Researchers from FAB LAB Reykjavik (Iceland), AALTO University (Finland) and IAAC Barcelona shared the BIO MODULES developed under Work Package 03 – Designing the Green Transformation.
The living lab enabled students, teachers and the ISMAT Design community to engage in four innovative initiatives involving biomaterials:
- Creation of bioimages using YEAST_GRAM;
- Dyeing with natural colours derived from waste materials such as onion skins, saffron, red cabbage, pits and avocado peel;
- Production of bioceramics using waste materials such as coffee grounds, orange peels, fish scales, oyster and mussel shells;
- Development of business models for the bioeconomy.
- This unique experience provided exceptional hands-on learning for students and reinforced the collaboration among the project partners.
