Together We Do Better: ISMAT in the Community

11 March 2025

ISMATEIA project, in partnership with Cáritas Paroquial de Portimão, promotes active citizenship and community empowerment through six volunteer initiatives.

The ISMATEIA project, coordinated by Professors Ana Martins and Carla Tomás from the Department of Psychology and Physical Education at ISMAT, seeks to bring to the institution the opportunity for students and lecturers to engage in active citizenship activities. Volunteering in higher education has proven to be an enriching practice both for students and for the institutions or communities involved. In addition to fostering a sense of social responsibility, it also provides students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in their fields of study to real-world situations, contributing to the development of a more comprehensive professional profile.

For the 2024/2025 academic year, this project is partnered with Cáritas Paroquial de Portimão, with six defined initiatives aimed at diverse target audiences in terms of age (children, young people, and adults) and function (service users and volunteers of the institution). The planned themes range from financial literacy and job-seeking techniques to emotional management and well-being promotion, always with the goal of empowering participants for personal and community development.

The initiatives will be planned and led by at least one lecturer and a group of student volunteers who are willing to contribute to the activities.
